About the artist:
My name is Morten Lykke, born in 1972, a Danish contemporary self taught artist. Originally from the northern part of the country, but now resides in the beautiful southern part of the island of Fyn.
I am a Master Mariner of profession and has worked among many things worked as a specialist in the Royal Danish Navy, where I was stationed in Greenland for a period.
I discovered my love and talent for painting, while I was sick with stress and found comfort and peace in my art.
MY paintings
My inspiration for my paintings come from my travels and experiences while being out in the world travelling. I have sailed a lot and lived in Greenland and Bali, Indonesia. In adition to that, I have travelled many times in Asia where the colors are strong and vibrant and the expressions can be powerful and unforgetful.
The contradictions between that, the sea and Greenland are equally strong, where Greenland is hard, gray and cold, Asia is warm, colorful and inviting. I like to try and make my paintings show all that.
my process
The process i go through can vary a bit from painting to painting, but some things are always the same. I spend a long time contemplating color choices and what the painting should express with its face. The background is, to me, one of the most important things about a painting and the color i pick will define EVERYTHING in the next steps of the creation of the artwork. To me, the painting is feelings and emotions, experiences and thoughts, that travels through my mind and comes out onto the canvas through my fingers. In the end the painting will be a surprise even to myself. Its the subconcience that runs the process at this point, after the initial planning and practical stage. I will use music to close myself off to the outside, and it will assist me in getting the paint achieve its final expression.
